Whitefish · Community Guide
Whitefish, by heart.
A mountain town with a lake at one end of Central Avenue and a ski hill at the other, and a downtown that never quite goes quiet.
The Place
Where the valley lifts.
Whitefish sits at the north end of the Flathead Valley, where the farmland gives way to timber and the Whitefish Range begins. Big Mountain rises directly above town; Whitefish Lake lies just below it. Glacier National Park is half an hour east. Most of what people come here for is visible from the stoplight.
Downtown is a working main street, not a resort village: a historic depot still served by Amtrak, a handful of blocks of brick and timber, restaurants that stay open through mud season, and a Saturday farmers market in summer that doubles as the town square.
Living Here
Four honest seasons.
Winter belongs to the mountain and to the lake trails; summer to the water, the Whitefish Trail, and long light that lasts past ten. The shoulder seasons are when locals reclaim the town. Properties range from in-town cottages and new downtown residences to lakefront, ski-access homes on the mountain, and acreage along the Whitefish and Stillwater rivers.
Zoning and short-term rental rules in Whitefish are specific and change by district. Before assuming how a property can be used, we verify it with the city for you. Read our short-term rental guide and check the City’s zoning map.
Around Town
What’s on.
Festivals, the farmers market, Winter Carnival, Huckleberry Days — the Chamber keeps the calendar, so we point you there rather than keep our own.
