Bigfork · Community Guide

Bigfork, on the bay.

A village where the Swan River drops into Flathead Lake, with a summer theater, a working harbor, and the Swan Range at its back.

The Place

A village scale.

Bigfork gathers around a single street that bends down to the water. The Swan River arrives through a short, loud canyon and settles into Bigfork Bay; the lake opens south from there for nearly thirty miles. Electric Avenue holds the galleries, the bakery, the Bigfork Summer Playhouse, and the kind of restaurants people drive from Whitefish for.

East of town the land climbs quickly into the Swan Range and Jewel Basin; south along the shore the orchards begin, and in July the cherry stands open along Highway 35.

Living Here

Lake life, with room.

Properties here run from village homes within a walk of the harbor, to lakefront along the east shore, to golf and lake-view communities in the hills above town, to acreage in the Swan Valley. The water is the organizing fact: who has it, who sees it, and how the morning light comes across it.

Bigfork is unincorporated Flathead County; land use and rental rules differ from Whitefish and from the lake’s Lake County shore. We confirm what applies to a specific parcel before you decide.

Around Town

What’s on.

The Festival of the Arts, the Whitewater Festival, Fourth of July on the bay, the Parade of Lights — the Chamber keeps the calendar, so we point you there rather than keep our own.
